My Holiday

On a bright Saturday my family and I were just finishing up breakfast and it was almost time to go sledding.  We cleared our plates and my mom, dad, brother, and I started pulling on our coats and snow pants.  Once we were all dressed up we headed outside to get our sleds from the shed.  The cold air smelled like fresh pine trees.  We grabbed the three sleds and headed down the driveway.  At the bottom there was a big hill of un-plowed snow on a road.  I hopped on my sled first and started zooming down the road.  Zane came next and ran right into me.  We kept zooming until we came to the bottom of the road and shot right off of it. Next to the road was a big pit with large snow banks on each side.  We tried to climb up the banks with little success but eventually we made it to the top.  We placed our sleds down and got prepared to launch ourselves down the steep slope.  We pushed off and went zooming down the hill faster than I expected.  We both fell off almost as soon as it started.  We did that for a few minutes then we climbed up again but this time for a different reason.  Beyond the hill was Lake Michigan.  We set up our sleds and prepared to push off the other side of the hill.  I went first.  I zoomed down the hill even faster than the last hill I went down.  The sled went so fast that I fell off pretty quickly.  Next came Zane.  He zoomed down fast too and e fell off as well.  We climbed back up and zoomed down again.  This time I stayed on a little longer.  We got off of our sleds and handed them to my dad.  Then we walked down to the edge of the lake.  There were big chunks of ice extending almost three feet back and if you stepped on them you would fall in.  We walked up the beach for some time.  Zane fell in every few minutes.  There were big 5 ft x 5 ft ice balls floating or on the bottom of the lake that we occasionally we jumped on.  Eventually we came to The Bass Lake Outlet.  The Bass Lake Outlet is a little winding river on the beach that has water coming over a mini waterfall from Bass Lake.  We got nearer to the river and saw there was a tall ledge of frozen sand.  The ledge was much harder than ice.  Even with all of us jumping on the ledge it would not break.  We started smashing them with our boots until a small piece came off.  My dad lifted the piece above his head and smashed it against the ledge.  It smashed a large piece out of it.  The sand/ice mixture was very heavy.  We kept smashing for a while until we got to cold.  The we walked farther and there was a huge ledge of ice sticking out into the water.  We didn't go on that until it was thick enough for it to hold us up.  We walked to the entrance/exit of the outlet (which was right near the mini waterfall).  We walked up the sand path and out onto the road.  We walked back up the road until we came to the gate that separated our grandparents property from the road.  We stepped around the gate because it was to cold to open or close and walked up the winding road to our grandparents house.  At a point where the road started seeming like a hill, we put our sleds down and raced back to the gate again.  I won.  We raced a few more time then officially headed back up to our grandparents house. The End

Schools in Michigan should not have year round schooling

Schools in Michigan should not have year-round calenders because it gives kids no time to relax.  If kids have no time to relax they will get overwhelmed and won't be able to take the pressure of school anymore.  If kids can't relax they won't get any time to hang out with their family or friends and they will start to feel lonely.  "It's a good idea, whether you live in the city or on a farm," said Ashley, who will be in 11th grade. "Without the summer off, we might go insane."(Opposing Viewpoints)  If there is year round school, there can't be summer break which will give students even LESS time to relax.  Some psychologists believe that too much study is detrimental to a child's mental health and children need time away from the regimentation of school.(Opposing Viewpoints)  Scholars such as the education reformer Horace Mann argued on behalf of a long summer vacation. Mann wanted teachers to have time off to better prepare themselves in their chosen profession. The freedom from study and lack of schedules associated with summer vacation is good for students and their families and is good social policy too.(Opposing Viewpoints) Year round schools don't give kids time to relax so they are bad.
